The New World Order Waltz

Words and music copyright 1998 by Steve Brooks

In the days of Fidel and Allende,
We would send in the old CIA.
But the spooks, they are no longer trendy
Putting Third World leaders away.
Take a look at the case of Jakarta -
Three decades that no one would dare
To challenge the reign of Suharto,
Whose wealth was a family affair.

CHORUS

Now you don't need an invader,
For making a dictator fall.
The callers are currency traders,
In the New World Order Waltz.

Then a funny thing happened in Thailand:
The economy went down the well.
The investors all headed for dry land,
As countries like dominoes fell.
All the bankers like lemmings were running
From Malaysia, Korea, Japan.
And Suharto did not see it coming,
The day that his chits hit the fan.
CHORUS

So that was the end of Suharto.
He hadn't a ghost of chance.
Now the dancers are changing their partners,
But there isn't a break in the dance.
While the despot is put out to pasture,
With the feathers he kept for his nest, Indonesia has found its new masters -
The World Bank and the IMF.

CHORUS
