Social Insecurity

Words and music copyright 1998 by Steve Brooks

Used to be, in my daddy's day,
Men would labor their lives away.
One employer your whole life through,
Then, they'd take good care of you.
Now, it's everyone for themself,
When they put you up on the shelf.
Safety net they have torn to shreds.
Golden years have turned to lead.

CHORUS
Will I find, when I reach maturity,
Only Social Insecurity?

I have heard all the experts say,
Put my cash in an IRA.
Just one question I have to ask -
Where do I get that extra cash?
They expect me to save and save,
While I'm earning the minimum wage,
Build my equity in a home,
If I could only get the loan.

CHORUS

Let me tell you my biggest fright:
Getting fired in the prime of life.
They'll find a worker to take my place,
Half my age for half my pay.
I'm afraid there will come a day,
Long before I am old and grey,
I'll be told that my race is run,
Though I'm only forty-one.

CHORUS
