Brooks and Held

Known for some of the sweetest harmonies this side of Gram and Emmylou, Steve Brooks & Paula Held range over country, rock and jazz classics, as well as their own originals. They bring it all a touch of Texas twang.

Brooks is often compared to comic songwriters like Jimmy Buffett and John Prine, but he’s best-known for writing a song-a-week for Jim Hightower's radio show. His work has been recorded by artists like Russell Crowe, Kevin So, Emily Kaitz and Slaid Cleaves, who calls him, "A great unsung songwriter of Austin." He's had music in two films and appeared in two more, including the 2004 release "Barbecue: A Texas Love Story." A master of words as well as music, he was featured on TV's "I've Got a Secret" as six-time World Pun Champion. "Steve Brooks could very well be the quintessential country singer,” writes the Austin Chronicle.

Held, who recently relocated to Austin after three decades in the Florida Panhandle, adds a strong jazz flavor to Brooks’ country chops. She’s been described as “Judy Collins meets Nancy Wilson meets Bucky Pizzarelli.” She’s been featured at festivals like the Apalachicola Jazz, Blues and Folk Festival and the Frank Brown International Songwriting Festival.
