Seven Babies

Words and music copyright 1997 by Steve Brooks

Seven babies, born in Iowa,
Seven bundles of joy.
Two proud parents standing over
Four little girls and three boys.
Gifts pour in from 'round the country,
To help them be healthy and grow.
Seven babies taken care of,
Fifteen million to go.

Politicians making speeches,
Calling for welfare reform.
Welfare moms must go to work
The moment their babies are born.
Then cut the food stamps, cut the health care,.
$50 billion or so.
Seven babies won't go hungry.
Fifteen million to go.

Americans are a generous people,
Looking a child in the face.
But when the child is just a number,
Then, it's a different case.

Seven babies born in Iowa,
Just one story to tell:
It takes a village to raise a baby.
It takes a nation, as well.
Think of all the babes this Christmas,
Shivering out in the cold.
Seven babies safe and warm now,
Fifteen million to go.
